Just William - Ethel Brown
Ethel is William’s older sister – and a never-ending source of irritation. She holds her brother in lofty disdain as she calmly plays off her hapless suitors against each other.
In episode two, rival admirers each bring Ethel a parrot – but William kidnaps them.
Ethel was played by 21-year-old newcomer Lily James, who had just left drama school. ‘James’ is her stage name – a tribute to
her late father, former actor and businessman Jamie Thomson,
who died of cancer in 2000.
After studying at the Arts Educational School in Tring, Hertfordshire, Lily won a place at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was signed by an agent in her third year and landed
the role of Ethel, even though she missed the first audition.
She said: ‘I thought I had missed out on my chance to play Ethel because I couldn’t go to the first Just William audition. But then another audition came along and I said, “I have to do this.”
‘I went along and got the part and started filming a week after leaving college.
‘I can’t explain how excited I was. I didn’t have the opportunity to get filthy, but I did get the chance to wear a lot of incredible red lipstick and have very curly, gorgeous hair. I loved playing Ethel because she allowed me to relive my girlie childhood, when everything was exciting, beautiful and pretty. But I don’t think I would get away with her behaviour nowadays.

Lily On Stage and in Theatre
There are many ways of approaching Shakespeare’s youthful tragedy: Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh take the scenic route in this new production. We are plunged into a vividly imagined 1950s Italy of dark-suited men, petticoated women, bicycling friars, patriarchal oppression and frantic partying. The big draw is the casting of Lily James and Richard Madden, who played opposite each other in the Branagh movie of Cinderella, as the doomed lovers. They acquit themselves very well: they have youth, looks and passion on their side.

The Seagull - Nina
The Seagull is a play about pointless and often obsessive love. Kostya is devoted to his seagull Lily James's Nina, here a flighty contemporary teen with many of the attractions of a tediously gushing rock groupie. She in turn loves the nonentity writer who follows Arkadina but probably only for the latter's little used stash of money.
It’s not hard to see why Lily James’s Nina makes Joseph Drake’s sweetly earnest Konstantin wretched by her abandonment and Anthony Howell’s compellingly serious Trigorin infatuated to the point of reckless rejuvenation. The 23-year-old newly installed starlet of Downton Abbey – who portrays the ravishing femme fatale Lady Rose – is sure to become one of British acting’s hottest properties; there’s an ardency and vitality about her, looks aside, that means you hang on her every word.

Playhouse (Katrina) / Definetely the Bahamas (Marijka)
Play House concerns the volatility and vulnerability of love, as a young couple, Simon and Katrina set up home in a grotty flat together. What we watch appears to be the range of possible experiences the pair might undergo, ranging from fulfilled happiness to mental breakdown and jealous discontent. In a series of short scenes we watch them playing house almost like children, getting drunk, scrubbing the fridge, dancing, quarrelling, making love. A threesome is arranged (though not depicted) and there are even hints that Katrina may have attempted suicide.
